Montagu, Edwin Samuel
(1879-1924)
   English politician, son of Samuel Montagu. He was elected to parliament in 1906, and served as parliamentary undersecretary of state for India from 1910 to 1914. In that year he became financial secretary to the Treasury, and in 1916 chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and minister of munitions. From 1917 to 1922 he was secretary of state for India. He was an opponent of Zionism and the Balfour Declaration.
